"Unity in the Community" Juneteenth Celebration

The Borough of Collingswood, in collaboration with the Collingswood Community Diversity Equity and Inclusion Committee, is gearing up for a weeklong series of activities leading up to Juneteenth. This series of events, activities and educational opportunities will culminate with a vibrant outdoor event on Sunday, June 16 at 11 a.m. in downtown Collingswood.

Juneteenth holds profound historical significance, commemorating the day when enslaved Africans in Texas learned of their freedom, marking the end of slavery in the United States. From its humble yet significant beginnings, Juneteenth has evolved into a celebration of community, culture and freedom. This local celebration aims to honor the rich cultural heritage of the Black diaspora, promote unity and educate the community about the significance of the holiday.

This year’s Juneteenth events will be filled with opportunities for families, residents and visitors to immerse themselves in the history and traditions of Juneteenth and Black Americans. A full week of events and activities will provide platforms for learning, cultural appreciation and support for local Black-owned businesses and artists.

The centerpiece of the celebration will be the outdoor event on Sunday, June 16, which promises a diverse array of entertainment and activities for attendees of all ages. The lineup includes music by The Trumpet Chics and The Marian Anderson Music Guild, spoken word performances sure to ignite minds and hearts with powerful messages, mouthwatering food from diverse vendors to tantalize taste buds, and a showcase of student artwork demonstrating the creativity and talent within the community.

The event will also feature a Black-owned vendor and arts market where attendees can discover unique treasures, support local Black-owned businesses, and explore the rich culture and creativity of the Black community. From handmade crafts and beauty and household items to exquisite artworks, there's something for everyone to enjoy. There will also once again be an official Juneteenth T-shirt sale designed by Collingswood artist Anthony Johnson.

Children will have the opportunity to engage in interactive crafts and activities and participate in a "Read Aloud" session designed to educate and inspire. The festival will also feature giveaways and provide valuable information and services from local community groups, fostering connections, collaborations, and anti-racism resources within the community.
